Jonathan Lutes, 38

Jonathan Richard Lutes, son of James Richard and Donna Jean (Boyer) Lutes, was born in Port Clinton, Ohio, on March 15, 1955. He was raised in Lakeside, Ohio, and attended Danbury Township Public Schools. At age 17 he moved to San Francisco where he completed his high school education. He continued living and working in San Francisco for a period of four years in which he tutored other students, helping them to achieve their GED.

He returned to northern Ohio and worked as a waiter for the Brown Derby and Holiday Inn restaurants in Sandusky and was employed for the last 5%1⁄2 years at Houlihan's Old Place in Parma.

Jonathan enjoyed landscape and gardening and took pride in making this world a greener, more beautiful place. He volunteered time at the Living Room and worked a diligent program of recovery from drug and alcohol abuse. His sense of humor, quick wit, and gentle nature brought happiness to his many friends and associates.

Jonathan was 38 when he died at his place of residence in the company of loving friends on Wednesday, July 28. A memorial service was held Sunday, August 8 at the

Riverside Cemetery in Cleveland. His ashes will be interred at a later date near his family's home.

Gay pioneer activist Stephen Endean, 44

Stephen Endean, the first executive director of the Gay Rights National Lobby and founder of the Human Rights Campaign Fund, died on August 4 in Washington, D.C., from AIDS complications, two days shy of his 45th birthday.

Endean was the lesbian and gay community's first professional lobbyist and a visionary leader for more than 20 years. As an activist and organizer, he had a passionate belief in the power of mainstream politics to achieve the goal of lesbian and gay civil rights. He was personally responsible for the creation of the community's most important lobbying, grassroots and political programs.

In the years following the New York Stonewall Riots of 1969, Endean sought to mobilize the emerging community as a political force, first in Minneapolis, and later nationally. In 1978 he became the first

executive director for the Gay Rights National Lobby in Washington. He created the HRCF in 1982 as a national gay political action committee and started its "Speak Out" letter campaign.

Born in Iowa, Endean spent most of his life in Minneapolis and Washington. A memorial service will be held at the Metropolitan Community Church in Washingtonon August 28 at 6 pm.
